Where does have its minimum?
Question
In this question we shall consider the function defined by where is a constant.
- Show that the function has one stationary value in the range if , and no stationary values in that range otherwise.
In the remainder of the question we shall be interested in the smallest value attained by in the range . Of course, this value, which we shall call , will depend on .
- Show that if then .
- What is the value of if ?
- Obtain a formula for in terms of , valid for .
- Using the axes opposite, sketch the graph of as a function of in the range .

Solution
We know that is a parabola, and since the coefficient of is positive, it is ‘vertex-down’ and has a minimum. It can only have one stationary value.
Differentiating gives so the stationary point occurs when , which is in the range if and only if .
Or else completing the square, , and so the vertex of the parabola is at , which is in the range if and only if .
The minimum value attained by in the range will occur either at an endpoint ( or ), or at a stationary point in between 0 and 1.
If then we have seen there is no stationary point in that interval. So as , we have .
For , again, no stationary point exists in the range . We now have , so .
If , then we know there is a stationary point of at , which is at the parabola’s vertex.
So the minimum value
To summarise the results of parts ii), iii) and iv) the function is:
A sketch of this looks like
How do we know for sure that the join at is smooth? Because the gradient of is and the gradient of is which agree when .
