In this applet, and are fixed. You can move .
Solution
Let’s draw a diagram to help us visualise the question.
The point has coordinates and has coordinates , so the gradient of is
Now we know that the line will be perpendicular to , and so will have gradient . As it passes through , it has equation (using the general formula ), which we can rearrange to obtain
In order to find , we must find where intersects the line , whose equation we can find since we know two points on it, and . The gradient of this line is then and so it has equation , or .
So to find we must find where meets , i.e., where and meet. We see that from which we obtain , and so is the point .
Finally, we need to find the coordinates of . To get from to , we move right , up . So if we go right , up from , we get to , which therefore has coordinates .
We can think of “to get from to ” as the vector , so the final sentence could be rewritten as:
As and , we see that has coordinates .
