Given a right angle and the equations of two sides, can we find the third?
Question
In the triangle the equations of two of the sides are and . Given that is the point and that is , find the equation of the third side.
Suggestion
How could we find out which of those sides goes through ?
Solution
Our best starting plan is to draw a diagram.
The point must be on either , or , and we can see by substituting in that is on the second of these but not the first.
So the first line () must give the side , so lies on this line. We are also told that the angle at is a right angle.
We can now sketch our diagram. (At this stage, we have not worked out whether passes through or not.)
Now the gradient of is , so the gradient of is , since is perpendicular to . Since the line passes through , it follows that it has equation (using the general formula ), which rearranges to or . This is the equation of the third side.
It also follows that is the line (since it has gradient , so is not perpendicular to ). This would allow us to work out the coordinates of , though we are not asked to find these.
