When is sinx or sin2x larger than a half?
Question
The fraction of the interval 0≤x≤2π, for which one (or both) of the inequalities sinx≥21,sin2x≥21 is true, equals
- 31;
- 2413;
- 127;
- 85.
Solution
The fraction of the interval 0≤x≤2π, for which one (or both) of the inequalities sinx≥21,sin2x≥21 is true, equals
- 31;
- 2413;
- 127;
- 85.
In the range 0≤x≤2π we have sinx≥21 if and only if 6π≤x≤65π,
and sin2x≥21 if and only if 12π≤x≤125πor1213π≤x≤1217π.
So at least one of the inequalities holds for 12π≤x≤65π and 1213π≤x≤1217π.
The first of these intervals has length 129π and the second has length 124π.
Therefore the fraction of the interval 0≤x≤2π, for which one (or both) of the inequalities is true, is 1213π out of 2π, which is 2413. Hence, the solution is (b).
