Can we find a and b as powers of 10?
Question
Solution
Approach 1:
We have that 10a2=b3. Taking logs to base 10 gives log1010+2log10a=3log10b.
But we know that log10a=log10b+1, and so 1+2(log10b+1)=3log10b.
This gives log10b=3, and so b=103, and a=104.
Approach 2:
We have
log10a⟹log10a⟹log10a⟹a=log10b+1=log10b+log1010=log10(10b)=10b.
Using the other equation, we find 100b2=10b3, and so b=0 or b=1000.
However log100 is not defined, and hence b=0 is not a solution.
Thus b=103, which leads to a=±104. Again, log10a appears in the question so a cannot be negative.
So we have b=103 and a=104.
