Where do the curves y=sin2x and y=sinx cross?
Question
The diagram shows part of the graphs of the curves y=sin2x and y=sinx.
A is a maximum point of the curve y=sin2x. B is a maximum point of the curve y=sinx.
C is the point of intersection of the curves shown. Find
- the x co-ordinate of C,
- the shaded area.
Solution
To find the x-coordinate of C, we need to solve the equation sinx=sin2x in the region 0≤x≤21π.
Now sinx=sin2x⟺sinx=2sinxcosx. We can see that sinx is not zero at C, so the solution we seek is cosx=21, and so x=3π.
Let’s call the shaded area R. To find R, we start with the area of the rectangle spanned by the line AB and the x-axis, which is clearly 4π.
We then subtract the area below the curves y=sinx and y=sin2x as shown by the red area and blue area respectively in the diagram. Thus
R=4π−∫π/4π/3sin2xdx−∫π/3π/2sinxdx.
Now ∫π/3π/2sinxdx=[−cosx]π/3π/2=21.
And thinking about stretching horizontally ∫π/4π/3sin2xdx=21∫π/22π/3sinxdx=21[−cosx]π/22π/3=41.
Thus R=4π−43.
