Can we find the area between a parabola and a line?
Question
The area of the region bounded by the curves y=x2 and y=x+2 equals
- 37,
- 27,
- 29,
- 211.
Suggestion
Draw a sketch! Where do the curves intersect?
Solution
The curves intersect when x2=x+2, or (x−2)(x+1)=0, so the points of intersection are at x=2 and x=−1.
From our sketch we can see that x+2≥x2 in the region −1≤x≤2, so
Area enclosed=(Area below y=x+2)−(Area below y=x2).
The area below y=x2 is calculated by integration, and the area below y=x+2 can be found using the formula for the area of a trapezium. We have Area below y=x+2=3×21+4=215,while Area below y=x2=−1∫2x2dx=[31x3]−12=38−3−1=3.
So the area we seek is 215−3=29
and the answer is (c).
You could also calculate the area under the straight line y=x+2 using the integral −1∫2x+2dx.
