Can we solve these simultaneous equations that involve reciprocals?
Question
Find the values of
and
which satisfy the simultaneous equations
Suggestion
We have simultaneous equations here; what methods do we know for solving them in general? Which method is most appropriate in this case?
Solution
Find the values of and which satisfy the simultaneous equations
Substitution works well as a method here. Elimination won’t work, as subtracting (a multiple of) one equation from the other will not cancel any terms. (This is because the terms in the second equation are not multiples of and as in the first equation, but instead multiples of and .)
From the first equation, Multiplying the second equation by gives and substituting the value of from above into this gives Therefore Rearranging this gives the quadratic This can be rewritten as and therefore the only solution is . Substituting this into the rearranged first equation gives
We can check our answers by substituting and into both equations; the first gives and the second also gives , so our solution correctly solves the simultaneous equations.
We might be able to see this solution to the equations quickly by inspection (just by looking at them!).
This doesn’t, however, prove that we have found all possible solutions—we need to work a little harder to do this.
Notice too that we can get one equation from the other by replacing with and with . Thus if is a solution, so is .

What if the question had asked for the solution to the pair of equations
instead?
You could use the GeoGebra applet below to explore this. Here are some questions you might consider.
- What curve does each equation generate?
- How many solutions are there to this pair of simultaneous equations for different values of and ?
- Are the solutions always in the same quadrant?
- If there are two solutions, can they lie on opposite parts of the curve?
