Magnetic field lines and the bar magnet
A magnetic field is the region where magnetic forces act, and a magnetic field line is the drawn picture of it: a line whose direction at any point is the direction a north pole would be pushed. Around a bar magnet the lines leave the north pole, curve through space, and dive into the south pole — bunched tight where the field is strong.
What you know already
A magnetic field line is the drawn direction a north pole would be pushed, and the bunching of those lines is the field's strength map. This note reads the bar-magnet pattern pole to pole, then builds the uniform gap between two facing magnets where the lines run straight, parallel and equally spaced.
Key points of understanding
- A magnetic field is the region around a magnet where magnetic forces act.
- A magnetic field line shows the direction of the force on a north pole at that point.
- Field lines leave the north pole and enter the south pole outside the magnet.
- The closer the field lines, the stronger the field at that place.
- Field lines never cross, because the field has one direction at each point.
