The pressure equation
Pressure asks how hard a force pushes on each square metre it meets: force divided by the area it acts across. Small area, concentrated push, big pressure; the pascal counts the newtons per square metre.
What you know already
The same push can bruise a thumb or anchor a nail, depending on how concentrated it is. These lessons define pressure as force spread over area, build the pressure equation, and walk the applications from drawing pins to tractors.
Key points of understanding
- Pressure is the concentration of a force — the force applied across each unit of area.
- p = F ÷ A, with pressure in pascals, force in newtons and cross-sectional area in metres squared.
- The cross-sectional area is the area the force pushes against at right angles.
- A formula triangle covering p, F or A reproduces every rearrangement of the equation.

A formula triangle can help rearrange the pressure equation
