Lesson 1 of 2
Combining forces along a line
One object, several forces, one outcome: the resultant force is the single force that sums up all of them. Along a straight line the arithmetic is two rules — same direction adds, opposite directions subtract — and the answer must always carry a direction of its own.
What you know already
Several forces can grip one object at once, yet the object responds to a single net effect. This note names that net effect, builds the along-a-line arithmetic that computes it, and then meets the everyday force that quietly opposes every slide: friction.
Key points of understanding
- The resultant force is the single force that describes the combined action of all the forces on a body.
- Forces along the same line add when they point the same way and subtract when they oppose.
- Equal opposing forces leave no resultant: the forces are then described as balanced.
- The resultant fixes both the size of the net force and the direction of the resulting motion.
- A complete resultant answer states the magnitude in newtons and the direction in words.
