Note; this figure is not intended to be completely accurately drawn.
In the figure the points X and Y are such that AX=21XB and OY=YX, while the point P is such that OA=3AP. The lines YQ and PQ are parallel to OA and OB respectively.
Given that OA=a and OB=b, express OP and OY in terms of a and b.
Given that YQ=ma and PQ=nb, find the values of m and n. Hence show that OAQY is a parallelogram.
Solution
Since OA=3AP, we know OP is 34a.
We can see that the vector OX=OA+AX=a+31(b−a)=32a+31b.
We also have that the vector OY=21OX=31a+61b.
The diagram tells us that OP+PQ=OY+YQ.
Thus 34a+nb=31a+61b+ma.
Since a and b are linearly independent (they are not parallel) we can equate coefficients of a and b on either side of this equation.
We are effectively saying here that if αa+βb=γa+δb, then α=γ,β=δ. Is that always true?
This tells us 34=31+m⟹m=1, and n=61.
Since m=1, we have that AO=QY, and we know these two lines are parallel, so therefore OAQY is a parallelogram.
