Can we sketch y=x2/(1+x4)?
Question
Find the coordinates of the turning points on the curve with equation y=1+x4x2.
Sketch the curve.
Suggestion
What do we know about the derivative of a function at a turning point?
Do we know any rules for differentiating functions like this one?
What does the curve look like for large values of x?
Solution
Finding the derivative
y′
using the product rule with
y=x21+x41
:
dxdy=1+x42x−(1+x4)24x3×x2=(1+x4)22x(1+x4)−4x5.
So when
y′=0
,
2x(1+x4)−4x5⟹2x−2x5⟹x(1−x4)⟹x(1−x2)(x2+1)⟹x=0,x=±1.=0=0=0=0
Substituting back into the equation we find that the coordinates of the turning points are
(0,0)
,
(±1,21)
.
For large x, the x4 term dominates, and so y→0as∣x∣→∞.
The only root coincides with the stationary point (0,0).
