Given the sequence (xn), what is ∑k=0∞1/xk?
Question
The sequence (xn), where n≥0, is defined by x0=1 and
xn=k=0∑n−1xkforn≥1.
The sum
k=0∑∞xk1
equals
- 1, (b) 56, (c) 58, (d) 3, (e) 527.
Suggestion
Can we write the sequence x0,x1,x2,... out? What kind of a sequence is this (almost)?
So what kind of a sequence is xn1 (almost)?
How do we sum this kind of sequence?
Solution
Can we write the sequence (xn) out?
Using the rule, we have:
x0=1,
x1=x0=1,
x2=x0+x1=1+1=2,
x3=x0+x1+x2=1+1+2=4,
x4=x0+x1+x2+x3=1+1+2+4=8,...
So xn=2n−1 for n≥1, and apart from the first term, we have a geometric sequence.
We also have that xn1=2n−11, and so the sequence (xn1) is also geometric except for the first term.
We can remember now that the sum to infinity of a geometric progression with first term a and common ratio r is 1−ra.
So ∑k=0∞xk1=1+1+21+41+81+...
=1+1−211=3,
and so that answer is (d).
