Can we use the laws of logs to find x and y?
Question
If logx=2+logy=log94−log1259+2log59, where all logarithms are to base 10, find x and y without using tables.
Suggestion
Which rules do you know to simplify expressions with logarithms? Can you use them to simplify the above equation?
Solution
We will simplify the right hand side of the above equation as far as possible. By using the logarithm quotient rule we get
log94−log1259+2log59=log4−log9−log9+log125+2log9−2log5=log4+log125−2log5.
Now as 125=53 we can use the logarithm power rule to get log4+log53−2log5=log4+3log5−2log5=log4+log5=log20. Therefore, we get logx=log20 and thus x=20.
Now for
y
we get the equation
2+logy=log20
. As all logarithms are to base
10
we can write
2=log100
and therefore
logy=log20−log100=log10020=log51.
Hence y=51.
