Can we find the position vector of the intersection from the given ratios?
Question
The position vectors of three points O,A and B are (00),(33.5) and (6−1.5) respectively. Given that OD=31OB and AE=41AB write down the position vectors of D and E.
Given also that OE and AD intersect at X, and that OX=pOE, and that XD=qAD, find the position vector of X in terms of (i) p (ii) q.
Hence calculate p and q.
Suggestion
How can we express the position vector of E in terms of things we already know? (A diagram might help.)
What other ways can we express XD? Which of these use the position vector of X? Can we rearrange this in a helpful way?
How can we derive two simultaneous equations in p and q from our work above?
Solution
For convenience, we define a=OA and similarly b, d, e and x.
We are told that d=31b=(2−21).
We also have that
AE⟹(e−a)⟹e=41AB=41(b−a)=41b+43a=(41549).
We have x=pe=(415p49p).
We also know that
x=d+DX=d+q(a−d)=(2−21)+q(14)=(2+q−21+4q).
Our two expressions for x must be the same, so (415p49p)=(2+q−21+4q).
Equating the x and y components separately gives us two simultaneous equations which we can solve to find p=32andq=21.
