How could we integrate tan3θ?
Question
- Evaluate
∫041πtan3θdθ,
giving the answer correct to two significant figures.
- By using the substitution x+1=u2, or otherwise, find
∫x−3x+1dx.
Solution
We can use the identity
sec2θ=tan2θ+1
to help us:
∫041πtan3θdθ=∫041π(tan2θ)tanθdθ=∫041π(sec2θ−1)tanθdθ=∫041πsec2θtanθ−tanθdθ
So we have two integrals to calculate; the first is
∫041πsec2θtanθdθ
We notice that dθdtanθ=sec2θ (this is a standard result). So, letting u=tanθ, our integral becomes
∫041πudθdudθ=∫0tan4πudu=21[2u2]0tan4π=21−0=21
Our second integral is
∫041πtanθdθ=∫041πcosθsinθdθ
We can calculate this by writing tanθ=cosθsinθ, substituting v=cosθ, and noticing that −sinθdθ=dv, so our integral is in fact
∫041πv−1dθdvdθ=∫0cos4πv−1dv=−[lnv]1cos4π=[lnv1]121=ln2−ln1=21ln2
So our final value for ∫041πtan3θdθ is
21−21ln2=0.1534...
which equals
0.15
to two significant figures.
Alternatively, we can use substitution in a different way. Let
u=tanθ
, so that
dθdu=sec2θ=1+tan2θ=1+u2
and hence
∫041πtan3θdθ=∫011+u2u3du=∫011+u2u(1+u2)−1+u2udu=[2u2]01−21∫011+u22udu=21−21[log(1+u2)]01=21−2log2=0.1534…
which equals 0.15 to two significant figures.
Take x+1=u2, so that x=u2−1, and dx=2udu.
Hence,
∫x−3x+1dx=∫u2−4u2udu=∫u2−42u2−8+8du=∫2+(u−2)(u+2)8du.
We can use partial fractions,
(u−2)(u+2)8⟹8=u−2A+u+2B=A(u+2)+B(u−2)
and substituting
u=±2
we find
A=2
and
B=−2
. Hence,
∫x−3x+1dx=2u+2∫(u−2)1−(u+2)1du=2u+2log(u−2)−2log(u+2)+c=2x+1+2log(x+1−2)−2log(x+1+2)+c.
