What can we say if this hyperbola and parabola meet at right angles?
Question
The curves y2=4ax and xy=c2 intersect at right angles. Prove that
- c4=32a4 and
- if the tangent and normal to either curve at the point of intersection meet the x-axis at T and G, then TG=6a.
Suggestion
The curves y2=4ax and xy=c2 intersect at right angles. Prove that (i) c4=32a4
What do the curves y2=4ax and xy=c2 look like? Could we sketch a diagram?
If the curves meet at (p,q), what are the gradients of the curves there?
What condition on the slopes of two lines corresponds to them being at right angles?
What are the equations of the tangent and normal?
Where do these lines meet the x-axis?
Solution
The curves y2=4ax and xy=c2 intersect at right angles. Prove that (i) c4=32a4
Let the point of intersection be
(p,q)
. Thus
q2=4ap, and pq=c2.
Using implicit differentiation on y2=4ax, we have 2ydxdy=4a, so the gradient at (p,q) is dxdy=q2a.
Similarly, differentiating xy=c2, we have y+xdxdy=0, so dxdy=x−y, and the gradient at (p,q) is p−q.
Since the curves are at right angles at (p,q), we have q2a×p−q=−1, which simplifies to p=2a.
Combining this with (intersection) we have q2=8a2, and since p2q2=c4 we have (2a)28a2=c4, or c4=32a4, as required.
Prove that (ii) if the tangent and normal to either curve at the point of intersection meet the x-axis at T and G, then TG=6a.
The tangent and normal both pass through (p,q) and have gradients q2a and p−q. So we can write their equations as x−p=q2a(y−q),andx−p=p−q(y−q).
Let these lines meet the x-axis at (x1,0) and (x2,0). Then we have x1−p=−q2aq,andx2−p=pqq.
Subtracting these two and substituting from (intersection), x2−x1=pq2+2a=p4ap+2a=6a as required.
We have the two lines x−p=m1(y−q),x−p=m2(y−q) where m1 is the gradient of the hyperbola, and m2 is the gradient of the parabola, both evaluated at (p,q). These meet the x-axis when y=0. Let these points be at x1 and x2 respectively -- we can be sure from the graph that x1>x2. Subtracting the two equations, we get (x1−p)−(x2−p)=−q(m1−m2) or x1−x2=−q(m1−m2). Now m1=−pq and m2=2aq so x1−x2=−q(−q2a−2aq)=2a4a2+q2=2a4a2+8a2=6a, as required.
